Six Senior Boys and Three Sophomore Girls State Bound for the PIAA Swimming Championship
Preliminary swimming qualifiers were released on March 6 for the PIAA Swimming and Diving championship which will be held at Bucknell University on March 16 and 17. Our WPIAL Champions Ganesh Sivaramakrishnan (100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke) and Kaitlyn Connors (100 Freestyle) are automatic qualifiers for the championship. The competition allows 32 athletes for each event. The eight automatic qualifiers are the winners of each event from eight district championships that sponsor 3A Swimming and Diving. The twenty four remaining slots (designated as time qualifiers) are filled with the fastest times swam by athletes during the district championships around Pennsylvania. All six seniors from our boys’ team qualified for at least an individual event. As noted, Ganesh is an automatic qualifier for 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke. Ryan Senchyshak qualified for 50 and 100 Freestyle. Andrew White is seeded in 200 IM and 500 Freestyle. Will Perham is swimming in 100 Breaststroke. Ethan Neal qualified in 100 Backstroke and is 1st alternate in 100 Butterfly. Daniel Wang also qualified in 100 Backstroke and is 2nd alternate in 50 Freestyle.
For the girls, Kaitlyn is an automatic qualifier in 100 Freestyle. She is also swimming in the 200 Freestyle as a time qualifier. Other time qualifiers are Amanda Aidar, who will swim in the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly and Kendell Drew who will swim in 100 Backstroke.
All three relays of the boys’ team qualified for the state championship: 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay. The girls’ team are qualified to swim in the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays.
Scratches and corrections by coaches are due to PIAA on March 7 and the final list of qualifiers and the psych sheet will be released shortly after.
